January 2028 Social Security Payment Schedule
Dates computed from SSA’s payment rules and the national federal holiday calendar. Match your beneficiary birthday group.
| Payment group | Payment date | Timing |
|---|---|---|
| Birthday 1-10 | January 12, 2028 | Scheduled payment |
| Birthday 11-20 | January 19, 2028 | Scheduled payment |
| Birthday 21-31 | January 26, 2028 | Scheduled payment |
| Before May 1997 / both benefits | January 3, 2028 | Scheduled payment |
| SSI | December 30, 2027 | Paid early for this benefit month |
A date shift is not an extra benefit
If the first or third falls on a weekend or federal holiday, SSA pays on the preceding business day. January 2028 SSI is scheduled for December 30, 2027. A month with two bank deposits may contain an early payment for the next benefit month.
Which birthday matters?
SSA generally uses the birthday of the person on whose earnings record the benefit is paid, not necessarily the recipient’s birthday. The pre-May-1997 and dual-benefit rules override the Wednesday grouping. Confirm your group on your SSA notice.
Questions, answered.
What are the 2028 payment dates based on?
SSA’s published payment-cycle rules, with national federal holiday and weekend adjustments. The calendar is a computation of those rules, not a guarantee of when your bank releases funds.
When is the SSI payment for January 2028?
December 30, 2027. If this is in the prior month, it covers the following scheduled benefit month.
Do early direct deposits change the SSA date?
Some banks make funds available earlier. That is a bank policy and is not the official scheduled payment date shown here.
What if my payment does not arrive?
SSA’s published calendar says to allow three additional mailing days before contacting Social Security. Check your direct-deposit details with your bank and SSA; do not send personal records to this website.
Are SSI and Social Security paid on the same day?
They follow different rules. People receiving both generally have SSI on the first and Social Security on the third, with holiday and weekend shifts.
